Monsoon brings early viral surge in Bhopal
20 Jul
Summary
- Bhopal hospitals report 30% OPD cases are viral before monsoon.
- New virus strains cause higher fevers up to 103°F.
- Children's diarrhea cases rise, linked to drinking water.

Hospitals in Bhopal are already experiencing a significant rise in viral infections as the monsoon season begins. Both AIIMS Bhopal and Hamidia Hospital report approximately 30% of their outpatient cases are related to seasonal viral illnesses. At district hospitals, this figure rises to around 40%, encompassing common cold and cough symptoms.
Experts note that the current viral strains are different, often causing fevers up to 103°F, significantly higher than typical infections. These are followed by symptoms such as sore throat, cough, body aches, and bronchitis. This early onset of post-viral bronchitis requires medical attention for persistent symptoms.
Beyond respiratory issues, pediatric wards are seeing an increase in diarrhea cases among children. This rise is linked to concerns about drinking water quality during the rainy season, with over a dozen children currently admitted. Enhanced hygiene practices are crucial to mitigate these health risks.
