Two more women have succumbed to complications following childbirth at the state-run Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Bhilwara, Rajasthan. The deaths, which occurred Wednesday night, were not disclosed by hospital authorities until Friday morning, raising further concerns about transparency and care.
These latest fatalities bring the total number of maternal deaths at the hospital to seven this July. The deceased have been identified as Sugna Bairwa, 22, and Rani Banjara, 18, both local residents. Authorities confirmed both women experienced severe medical complications post-delivery.
Sugna Bairwa was referred to the hospital after suffering excessive bleeding post-delivery at a satellite facility. Rani Banjara developed severe postpartum haemorrhage shortly after a normal delivery. Investigations into both cases are currently underway.
Previous incidents in early July led to an inspection by the health minister and directives for improvements. Despite state-level efforts to screen high-risk pregnancies and enhance emergency care, such tragic outcomes highlight persistent issues in government hospital maternal care.
