New Study: Gradual Tapering Cuts Relapse Risk
11 Dec
Summary
- Slow tapering with psychological support significantly reduces relapse risk.
- Abrupt or fast tapering of antidepressants carries the highest relapse risk.
- Gradual withdrawal with support could prevent relapse in one in five individuals.

A groundbreaking study published in The Lancet Psychiatry reveals that the most effective strategy for discontinuing antidepressant medication involves a slow, gradual tapering of dosage alongside psychological support. This method was found to be nearly as effective as continuing the medication, significantly reducing the risk of depression relapse compared to abrupt cessation or rapid tapering, which carry the highest risks. Researchers analyzed data from over 17,300 patients across 76 clinical trials, concluding that updated clinical guidelines should promote individualized deprescribing with gradual tapering and structured psychological support to improve patient outcomes globally.
