Bengaluru's UV Index Hits Record High: Health Alert Issued

Bengaluru is facing an unprecedented health challenge as its ultraviolet (UV) index has reached an extreme level of 13 this year, significantly higher than the usual peak of 12 for this time. Medical professionals are strongly advising residents to take immediate precautions against prolonged sun exposure due to the severe risks associated with intense UV radiation. These risks encompass immediate effects like sunburn and dehydration, as well as serious long-term consequences.

Doctors are observing a notable increase in patients suffering from skin conditions aggravated by heat and UV exposure. Acute symptoms include redness, itching, and allergic reactions, while chronic exposure can accelerate skin aging and potentially lead to skin cancer. Eye specialists are also reporting cases of photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis from short-term exposure. Prolonged exposure poses risks of pterygium, cataracts, and even retinal damage, emphasizing the critical need for protective measures.
