Bengaluru Docs Warn: Unqualified Gynaecologists Threaten Mothers' Lives
16 Jun
Summary
- Unqualified practitioners pose grave risk to mothers and newborns.
- Health department ordered to inspect private clinics and take action.
- ASHA workers to report on pregnant women's dietary habits.

Bengaluru Urban district officials are taking decisive action against unqualified practitioners who are reportedly posing as gynaecologists. The Bengaluru Urban zilla panchayat has directed the health department to intensify its efforts against these individuals, who are allegedly administering unauthorized treatments in the outskirts and suburban areas, thereby endangering mothers and newborns.
To combat this threat, a special team will be constituted to inspect private gynaecology clinics across the district. Legal action will be initiated against those found to be unqualified, many of whom are ayurveda or homeopathy graduates. Officials noted that residents in rural areas often cannot distinguish between MBBS doctors and those with other degrees, leading them to first available clinics during emergencies.
Furthermore, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) will document the dietary patterns of pregnant women and new mothers in the district over the next three months. This initiative aims to identify nutrient-deficient habits that may contribute to poor infant health and malnutrition, enabling targeted awareness campaigns and nutritional interventions. Efforts are also underway to reduce reliance on groundwater for drinking water as part of fluorosis prevention measures, and campaigns are being stepped up to raise awareness about mosquito-borne diseases.
