Bengaluru has confirmed no human cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) after a 10-day intensive surveillance and containment operation. The outbreak was first identified on April 14 at the state poultry rearing training centre in Mathkuru village, Hesaraghatta. Rapid response teams were deployed, establishing infected and surveillance zones.
The animal husbandry department culled all birds and disposed of contaminated materials. Health teams surveyed over 28,000 people in nearby villages. Nasopharyngeal samples from quarantined staff have tested negative for H5N1. Healthcare facilities in Bengaluru continue to monitor for influenza-like illnesses.
A 90-day ban has been imposed on poultry activity at the affected centre, with periodic disinfection planned. The public is advised to handle poultry cautiously, cook meat and eggs thoroughly, and report unusual bird deaths.
