Bengal Organ Donation Slows Dramatically
14 Aug
Summary
- Organ donations in Bengal have significantly decreased this year.
- Only seven deceased donors have been recorded so far in the current year.
- Private hospitals, not government facilities, accounted for all donations.
The pace of deceased organ donation in Bengal has slowed this year, with only seven donors recorded so far. This contrasts sharply with the same period last year when 13 deceased donors gave the gift of life to at least 40 recipients.
Despite 14 identified brain-dead cases this year, not all families have consented to organ donation. Significantly, all donations thus far have originated from private hospitals, with Apollo Multispecialty Hospital leading with five donations. IPGMER & SSKM Hospital has not recorded any donations this year.
Multiple organizations observed Organ Donation Day with awareness initiatives. ROTTO (East) held a rally, the Central Govt Health Scheme organized a camp, and the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine conducted a campaign. The Bengal Organ Donation Body hosted the "East Zonal Deceased Organ Donation Conclave."
