Hysterectomy Surge in Beed: Health Dept Acts
26 Jan
Summary
- 1,310 women in Beed had hysterectomies in 2025.
- Sugarcane workers face high rates of hysterectomies.
- Maharashtra health department to enhance oversight.

The Maharashtra public health department is implementing new measures to monitor hysterectomies in Beed district following a significant increase in procedures, especially among sugarcane workers. In 2025 alone, 1,310 women in Beed had hysterectomies, including 113 sugarcane workers and eight under 35. Since 2019, over 362 sugarcane workers have undergone this surgery, with 2025 showing the highest numbers.
The department is revamping its oversight committee and mandating quarterly reviews to scrutinize the medical necessity of these surgeries. This action comes amid allegations that some women sugarcane workers might be pressured into hysterectomies to avoid menstrual-related absences during the demanding harvesting season. While coercion isn't confirmed, the health department acknowledges the need for tighter monitoring.
Officials cite factors like poor menstrual hygiene, delayed care, social taboos, and strenuous work contributing to higher rates among sugarcane workers. Activists, however, emphasize economic vulnerability and lack of health awareness. The restructured committee will ensure surgeries are medically justified, with a proposal for government approval soon.
