Bangladesh Measles Crisis: 600+ Lives Lost
4 Jun
Summary
- Nearly 600 deaths reported due to measles and its complications.
- An emergency nationwide immunisation campaign was launched.
- Measles requires 95% vaccination rate to prevent its spread.

Bangladesh is confronting a severe measles outbreak, having reported close to 600 fatalities. As of Wednesday morning, seven additional children died, bringing the total to 601, comprising 90 direct measles deaths and 511 from related symptoms. Since March 15, approximately 60,000 suspected measles patients have been hospitalized.
In response, the government initiated an emergency nationwide immunization drive. Health officials indicate a reduction in infection rates, with 18.4 million children vaccinated. However, attributing all deaths solely to measles is cautioned against, as pneumonia is common during this season. The outbreak involves the B3 strain of the measles virus, which has been prevalent.
Factors contributing to the rise in cases include immunization gaps, often linked to socio-political instability. A nationwide vaccination campaign planned for 2020 was delayed due to unrest. The current administration has lowered the vaccination age to six months, prioritizing children aged six months to five years at high risk.
