Measles Deaths Surge: Bangladesh Faces Governance Crisis

As of Thursday, Bangladesh has recorded at least 605 confirmed and suspected deaths from measles and related symptoms, marking a severe health crisis. In the 24 hours preceding Thursday morning, four more fatalities were reported, increasing the total. Healthcare facilities are under significant strain, especially pediatric intensive care units and isolation wards.

The Awami League has characterized the outbreak as a "man-made failure of governance" rather than a natural disaster. The party alleges that critical decisions made by a former interim administration in September 2025, including abandoning the UNICEF vaccine procurement system for a cumbersome open tender process, created a substantial immunity gap among children.

Despite assuming office in February this year with knowledge of the crisis, the current government's response has been criticized as "disturbingly inadequate." The Awami League is calling for an immediate declaration of a national public health emergency with clear targets and daily reporting. They also demand an urgent, transparent, and internationally overseen vaccination campaign, along with an independent investigation into procurement failures.
