Dengue Surge Looms: Bangladesh Faces Alarming Outbreak

Health experts in Bangladesh have issued a stark warning, anticipating a sharp rise in dengue infections over the next two months. This projection comes as the country grapples with an accelerating outbreak, exacerbated by favorable wet weather conditions and inadequate mosquito control measures.

Reported dengue infections in Bangladesh saw a dramatic increase, climbing more than eightfold from 714 to 5,924 by the end of June. Dengue-related deaths also escalated from one in late May to 18 by the close of June. Experts predict a doubling of cases in Dhaka during July compared to June, with a potential three to fourfold increase by August. However, the most significant surge is anticipated outside the capital, where numerous districts face a higher risk of steep infection increases.

This escalating dengue threat adds immense pressure to Bangladesh's already fragile healthcare system. The country is concurrently experiencing one of its most severe measles outbreaks in decades, with over 100,000 suspected cases and more than 10,000 confirmed infections reported since mid-March, resulting in over 700 deaths. Experts emphasize the urgency for governmental action, specifically recommending the establishment of a nationwide early warning system. Such a system would aid in identifying mosquito breeding grounds and emerging hotspots, enabling faster responses and community warnings to mitigate worsening outbreaks.
