Bangalore Water Quality Scrutinized Amidst Illness Outbreak
28 Nov
Summary
- Coliform contamination confirmed in water samples, raising health concerns.
- Officials attribute child's death to pre-existing health issues, not water.
- Residents report recurring bouts of diarrhea and vomiting; one hospitalized.

Concerns over water quality have surfaced in Bangalore following the confirmation of coliform contamination in water samples. Despite these findings, officials maintain that a recent child fatality was not linked to the water, citing pre-existing co-morbidities. However, residents have reported a spate of illnesses, including recurring diarrhea and vomiting over the past few weeks, with one individual requiring hospitalization.
An investigation has been launched by the South City Corporation to examine both the child's death and the widespread ailments. This follows multiple medical camps and precautionary measures reportedly taken in the complex over the last month. While the apartment association initially reported no contamination issues, a health team member confirmed minor contamination in earlier water tests.
Further tests on stool samples from residents have not conclusively identified a waterborne infection. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has since conducted leakage checks, repaired faulty lines, and performed chlorination. Civic officials convened with BWSSB representatives, the apartment association, and residents to address the situation.
