Cancer Survey Near Bandhwari Landfill
14 May
Summary
- Cancer survey to assess health impacts near Bandhwari landfill.
- Comparative analysis will compare cancer rates in two areas.
- Past health screening found no major cancer outbreak.

Authorities are planning a cancer prevalence survey in villages situated within a 5 km radius of the Bandhwari landfill. This survey is a direct response to concerns regarding the potential health effects of pollution and toxic leachate emanating from the waste treatment plant.
To establish a clearer picture, a comparative survey will be conducted in another Gurgaon locality, likely Sohna or Bhondsi, to create a baseline for analysis. This comprehensive exercise, initiated by Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh, will involve analyzing existing data on non-communicable diseases and potentially direct house-to-house checks by ASHA workers.
The survey's methodology will include calculating cancer prevalence by comparing total population, screened population, and identified cancer patients in both areas. This ratio-based analysis is crucial for determining if cancer rates are statistically higher near the landfill, addressing long-standing allegations of groundwater and soil contamination.
Officials aim to gather critical evidence to understand the impact of landfill pollution on elevated cancer risks. Findings will guide future health interventions and policy decisions. A similar health screening of 300 residents around the landfill in January 2024 did not indicate a major cancer outbreak.
