Jacqueline Shaw, a 47-year-old fashion and design consultant and breast cancer survivor, has founded The Canerow Company in 2024. She creates braided hair extensions using fibres extracted from banana tree bark, offering a sustainable alternative to commonly used toxic plastics.
Shaw, who underwent chemotherapy in 2021, was inspired by the potential of banana bark fibres during her recovery. The business, which began importing supplies from Uganda in the past year, utilizes upcycled bark from banana farmers, reducing waste. This innovation addresses growing consumer demand for healthier, eco-friendly hair products.
The banana bark extensions are reusable, washable, and biodegradable, making them a cost-effective and environmentally sound choice despite a higher initial price. Shaw aims for plant-based hair solutions to eventually replace plastic alternatives as environmental consciousness rises globally.
