Summary
- Infant suffered nitrite poisoning from improperly prepared formula.
- Parents used boiled vegetable juice instead of water for baby formula.
- Doctors advise preparing infant formula strictly with warm water.

A three-month-old infant in China was recently admitted to the intensive care unit due to severe nitrite poisoning. The baby's parents had prepared his formula using boiled vegetable juice instead of water, seeking to provide extra nutrition. However, this decision led to critical health issues for the infant.
The baby began showing alarming symptoms, including purple skin discoloration and difficulty breathing, shortly after consuming the formula. Doctors diagnosed the condition as nitrite poisoning, explaining that a baby's undeveloped digestive and kidney systems cannot effectively process the high levels of nitrites present in vegetable juice that has been boiled for extended periods.
Nitrites in the bloodstream impair the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity, resulting in the observed cyanotic symptoms. The infant received treatment and was discharged after two days. Medical experts are now emphasizing the importance of using only warm water to prepare baby formula, warning against substitutes like vegetable juice, rice water, or fruit juices.
Parents are urged to be aware of nitrite poisoning symptoms and to seek immediate medical help if they observe any such signs in their infants.
