Health Visitor Warns of Deadly Baby Sleep Product
24 Oct
Summary
- A baby pillow with arms is linked to SIDS risk.
- Product can cause suffocation, overheating, and entrapment.
- UK and abroad have seen infant deaths linked to these pillows.

A concerning alert has been issued by Ruth Watts, a registered health visitor, regarding a baby product circulating online that may elevate the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in infants under 12 months. Watts, with over a decade of experience, expressed strong concerns on Instagram, emphasizing that market availability or influencer endorsements do not guarantee safety.
The product in question is a pillow designed with arms to cradle newborns, which she warned encourages unsupervised sleep. This design increases the risks of entrapment, suffocation, and overheating. Furthermore, it promotes side-sleeping, which is discouraged until a baby can independently roll over. The health visitor stressed that any product impeding a clear sleep space heightens SIDS risk.
Safe infant sleep guidelines recommend babies sleep on their back on a firm, flat mattress, with a clear cot free of pillows, duvets, and soft toys. Lightweight blankets or sleep bags are advised. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued a product safety alert in December 2025 concerning these types of pillows, linking them to infant deaths in the UK and abroad.
