A handcrafted metal butterfly sculpture has been installed at Peterborough City Hospital, serving as a memorial for babies lost by families. Located outside the Women's and Children's Unit, the artwork provides a dedicated space for reflection and remembrance.
The initiative was spearheaded by midwife Afton Cope, who was inspired by the loss of her son Charlie in 2023. Cope expressed a desire for bereaved parents to feel acknowledged, stating, "You feel invisible, as all other parents walk around you with their babies for the world to see."
Cope collaborated with her sister, nurse Lorren, and bereavement midwife Lesley Carline. They worked with local artist Jeni Cairns to create the six-foot-wide sculpture. Cairns incorporated natural elements like forget-me-not flowers and bees, aiming to create a lasting tribute that connects viewers to the world's beauty and offers comfort.
