Baby Food Giants Accused of Poisoning Infants
13 Jun
Summary
- Hundreds of lawsuits allege baby food brands knowingly exposed infants to heavy metals.
- Alleged injuries include developmental harm, autism, and ADHD from toxic contaminants.
- FDA's 'Closer to Zero' initiative aims to reduce heavy metal contamination in baby food.

Since 2026, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against prominent baby food manufacturers, including Gerber and Beech-Nut. These legal actions allege that companies "knowingly exposed" infants to toxic heavy metals such as inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. Parents claim this contamination has led to debilitating brain injuries, autism spectrum disorder, and ADHD in their children.
A congressional inquiry in 2021 revealed that commercial baby foods were tainted with significant levels of toxic heavy metals. Internal documents indicated that some companies were aware of the contamination and, in some instances, exceeded their own internal standards for ingredient use. Testing found levels far exceeding FDA limits for bottled water.
In response to these concerns, the FDA has introduced the "Closer to Zero" campaign to reduce contamination in food for children. The agency also issued a reminder of manufacturer standards in February 2021 and, in 2025, established non-legally enforceable lead limits for baby food. Additionally, Florida has launched a new program to enhance baby formula safety testing, specifically targeting heavy metals and pesticides.
