Donated Formula Causes Botulism in Vulnerable Babies
19 Jan
Summary
- Infant botulism sickened over 50 babies nationwide.
- Recalled ByHeart formula was donated to needy families.
- A 10-month-old boy remains on a feeding tube.

A Portland, Oregon, infant is battling severe infant botulism after consuming recalled ByHeart baby formula, part of a donation program for families in need. The 10-month-old boy, Ashaan Carter, has been hospitalized twice and requires a feeding tube due to the dangerous infection that has impacted over 50 babies nationwide. His mother received the formula through a state program shortly before a nationwide recall was issued.
Officials acknowledge the Oregon Department of Human Services received ByHeart formula from PDX Diaper Bank, one of many nonprofits participating in the company's initiative to distribute nearly 24,000 cans to vulnerable families since June 2022. Ashaan developed severe symptoms, including muscle weakness and constipation, leading to his hospitalization and diagnosis of presumed infant botulism tied to the formula.
The situation highlights the devastating impact on families trusting social services and donated products. While no new cases have been reported since December 17, investigations into the source of the outbreak are ongoing, and multiple lawsuits have been filed against ByHeart. The company's production remains shut down.
