ICMR Trial: Ayurveda Equals Supplements for Anemia
21 May
Summary
- Ayurvedic treatments proven as effective as iron-folic acid for moderate anemia.
- Nearly 4,000 women aged 18-49 with moderate anemia participated in the trial.
- The study assessed haemoglobin levels and clinical outcomes over 90 days.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has concluded a multicentric Phase III clinical trial demonstrating that Ayurvedic formulations are therapeutically equivalent to iron-folic acid supplementation for moderate anemia in women. This trial, conducted in collaboration with the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), involved approximately 4,000 non-pregnant women aged 18-49 who had moderate anemia.
The study rigorously compared Punarnavadi Mandura, both alone and with Drakshavaleha, against the standard iron-folic acid treatment. Key assessments focused on haemoglobin levels and clinical outcomes over a 90-day period. The findings were presented at the '1st ICMR Annual Clinical Trial Meet 2026'.
This event also saw the launch of a report detailing challenges and recommendations for advancing First-in-Human Phase 1 Clinical Trials in India. The report, developed with expert input, suggests strengthening regulatory capacity and streamlining approval processes to foster innovation in clinical research.
