22 Oct
Summary
- Seven waterbirds died from H5N1 avian influenza at Vedanthangal enclosure.
- Zoo closed for two days for disinfection and biosecurity measures.
- Outbreak is likely over, with no deaths reported since October 9.
Seven waterbirds at Chennai's Vandalur Zoo have died from the H5N1 avian influenza virus. National laboratory confirmation arrived on Wednesday, nearly seven months after a similar incident at Guindy Children's Park. The affected birds, including painted storks, a pelican grey, and a grey heron, died between October 3 and October 9.
In response, the zoo has implemented rigorous disinfection measures and temporarily closed its gates on October 22 and 23. Zoo officials state that the outbreak is likely concluded, with no fatalities recorded since October 9. Biosecurity measures have been enhanced to prevent further spread.
Prophylactic treatments, including antibiotics and antiviral medications, were administered to remaining waterbirds. The zoo emphasized that the closure is a temporary measure to facilitate thorough sanitization and monitoring.
The H5N1 virus is a highly pathogenic strain that primarily affects birds but can occasionally infect mammals. Transmission occurs through droppings, saliva, and nasal secretions, often leading to sudden death in infected birds.
