Care Home's 'Closed Culture' Leads to Inadequate Rating
15 May
Summary
- Care home told staff not to report concerns to regulators.
- The home was rated inadequate for the third time in 15 months.
- New manager is addressing safety and other issues found.

Autumn House, a care home on the Isle of Wight, has been rated "inadequate" by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the third time in 15 months. During a February and March 2026 inspection, the CQC found that the home operated with a "closed culture," actively discouraging staff from reporting concerns to regulators.
Inspectors noted that residents spent most of their time in bedrooms or a lounge with minimal staff engagement. The service also failed to inform health professionals about significant weight loss in some residents. The home was found to be in breach of regulations concerning safety, consent, and management.
However, improvements have been initiated since a new manager took charge during the inspection. Chetan Borkhatria, director of Autumn House Care, acquired the company in March 2025 when it was already facing compliance issues. He stated that substantial work is underway to stabilize operations, strengthen governance, and improve safety, with a commitment to rebuilding trust and achieving expected standards.
