Flu Cases Surge: Urgent Booster Shot Urged
23 Dec
Summary
- Flu cases are four times higher than this time last year.
- Over 29,000 lab-confirmed flu cases reported in December.
- Booster shots are recommended to combat rising infections.

Australians are facing a significant wave of influenza, prompting urgent calls for booster vaccinations. The Royal Australian College of GPs reported that flu cases are currently four times higher than they were during the same period last year. As of December 21, more than 29,000 lab-confirmed influenza cases have been recorded this month, contributing to a substantial increase in overall cases for 2025.
Health authorities are particularly concerned as vaccination rates have declined. Dr. Michael Wright of the RACGP highlighted the surge in cases beginning early in the year and noted that holiday gatherings can exacerbate transmission. He stressed the potential severity of influenza, which has been associated with 1,508 deaths in Australia by November 2025, urging people to protect themselves and their loved ones.
To mitigate the risk of severe infection, getting a flu booster shot is strongly recommended. Future initiatives, such as free needle-free vaccinations for young children in several states next year, aim to make vaccination more accessible. Vulnerable populations, including seniors, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic conditions, are at a higher risk and should take extra precautions.
