Aussie Cannabis Sales Plummet Amidst Regulator Crackdown
16 Apr
Summary
- Medicinal cannabis sales dropped by nearly 30% in Australia.
- New guidelines were issued by regulators in July 2025.
- Over one million fewer cannabis products were sold in H2 2025.

Medicinal cannabis sales in Australia have experienced a substantial downturn, marking the first recorded decrease in ten years. Data reveals a near 30 per cent drop in sales during the latter half of 2025.
This sharp decline is directly linked to new guidelines introduced by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) in July 2025. These regulations were enacted to address what AHPRA described as poor prescribing practices within the rapidly expanding medicinal cannabis market.
Figures obtained through freedom of information requests show a significant reduction in product volume. In the second half of 2025, approximately 2.65 million cannabis products were sold, representing over one million fewer units compared to the first six months of the year. The regulatory actions specifically targeted online clinics and general practitioners found to be issuing a high volume of prescriptions.
