Rat Infestation Shuts Hospital Kitchen in Texas

A significant rat infestation has led to the closure of the kitchen at St. David's South Austin Medical Center in Texas. The problem emerged during a massive $180 million expansion project aimed at adding four stories to the facility, with completion anticipated between late 2028 and early 2029. Hospital officials confirmed that rats were observed in multiple areas, prompting immediate action.

In response, hospital CEO Charles Laird stated that the issue was identified in an area disrupted by construction. The hospital promptly shut down affected spaces, including the kitchen, and significantly enhanced pest control and sanitation protocols. During the kitchen's closure, meals were prepared off-site, and food trucks were utilized for staff and visitors. This situation highlights the critical need for hospitals to manage public health risks effectively, especially when construction projects intersect with patient care environments.
