Asthma Relief: Daily Steps Outshine Aerobics
8 Sep
Summary
- Increasing daily steps offers similar asthma benefits to structured exercise.
- Walking improves quality of life and reduces anxiety/depression in asthma patients.
- Exercise complements, but does not replace, prescribed asthma medication.
For individuals managing asthma, a recent study suggests that increasing daily walking distance may be as effective as dedicated aerobic exercise programs. This finding, published in Pulmonology, highlights the significant benefits of simple physical activity on overall well-being and disease management.
The research involved 52 adults with uncontrolled, yet physically inactive, asthma. Half engaged in supervised, twice-weekly aerobic training sessions, while the other half received counseling to increase their daily steps, aided by a smartwatch.
After eight weeks, both groups experienced comparable improvements in asthma control and quality of life. Notably, at a four-month follow-up, the group encouraged to walk more maintained higher step counts than those who had participated in the structured aerobics program.
Researchers emphasized that neither approach should substitute prescribed medications. Instead, both increased walking and aerobic exercise serve as valuable complements to standard asthma treatment, enhancing patient outcomes and daily living.
