In Lanka town, central Assam, rabies has been confirmed following a mass dog bite incident that occurred on March 26, affecting about 40 people. Canine experts from an animal care center in Sonapur dispatched a team to Lanka, coordinating with local veterinary officers investigating the events.
The investigation team found two deceased dogs suspected of carrying rabies. Samples from a domesticated dog, exhumed after being buried by its owner, were tested. Laboratory analyses at multiple centers, including the College of Veterinary Science in Guwahati, confirmed the presence of rabies.
Close examination of six bite victims revealed that three were associated with rabies infection. This situation highlights a widespread public health issue that necessitates ongoing efforts.
