26 Feb
Summary
- Craft sand sold in UK stores recalled due to asbestos contamination.
- Asbestos is a banned substance posing health risks even at low exposure.
- Customers advised to clean used areas with wet cloths and dispose of sand.

Multiple craft sand toys sold across the UK are subject to an urgent recall due to concerns over asbestos contamination. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued a product recall notice, warning that the sand may contain asbestos, a banned substance known to pose significant health risks. This includes Stretcherz Toys, Colour Day's Sand Art activity kit, and Addo Play Limited's Out To Impress Sand Art Creations.
These recalled items were available at various popular retailers such as Aldi, Argos, Asda, Smyths Toys, Tesco, TK Maxx/Homesense, The Works, Amazon, eBay, The Entertainer, Matalan, and M&S shops. The recall affects products sold between August 2023 and February 2026. The OPSS has provided specific disposal instructions for affected customers, advising them to stop using the sand immediately and to clean any used areas thoroughly with wet cloths to prevent dust.
Customers possessing the contaminated sand are advised to wear gloves and a mask when cleaning and disposing of the product. They should double-bag the sand along with protective gear and cleaning materials before placing it in general household waste. A full refund can be obtained from the distributor. Shein has already withdrawn the affected items from its platform.
