Culture Fights Aging: Your Brain's New Gym

Summary
- Engaging with arts is as effective as exercise for slowing aging.
- Weekly arts engagement linked to 4% slower biological aging.
- Variety of cultural activities may enhance health benefits.

Engaging with arts and culture offers significant health benefits, comparable to those of exercise in slowing biological aging. A study published in Innovation In Aging examined DNA methylation markers, known as epigenetic clocks, to assess aging rates.
Researchers found that individuals who frequently participated in arts and cultural activities, especially a variety of them, showed a slower pace of aging. Those engaging in arts at least once a week aged up to 4% slower, a benefit similar to that gained from regular physical exercise compared to inactivity.
Furthermore, the study indicated that monthly engagement with arts correlated with 3% slower aging, while even engaging at least three times a year was linked to a 2% reduction in aging rate. On average, weekly arts participants appeared one year younger biologically than those who rarely engaged with cultural activities.
