Parliament Questions Arthritis Review's Scope
29 Jan
Summary
- Labour MP questions review's focus on arthritis and MSK needs.
- Millions in the UK suffer from painful musculoskeletal conditions.
- MSK issues cause over 30 million working days lost annually.

Parliamentary scrutiny is being applied to the Timms Review, with Labour MP James Naish seeking assurances that it will fully encompass the needs of those living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. He specifically questioned the measures in place to ensure these specific needs are adequately addressed.
The review has recently bolstered its leadership with the appointment of co-chairs Sharon Brennan and Dr. Clenton Farquharson CBE. A steering group is being established to guide the review's direction, structure, and recommendations, with further updates from the DWP expected soon.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, including arthritis and back pain, affect over 20 million people in the UK, approximately one-third of the population. These conditions frequently result in pain, stiffness, and limited mobility, significantly impacting daily life and independence.
Annually, MSK conditions lead to the loss of over 30 million working days across the UK. They also constitute a substantial portion of GP consultations, accounting for up to 30% in England. DWP data indicates a significant link between these conditions and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims.
