17 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout are the most common types of arthritis in older adults
- Symptoms like morning stiffness, joint pain, and swelling can significantly impact daily life
- Early intervention and proper management are crucial to slow arthritis progression

As of November 17th, 2025, arthritis remains a widespread concern in the UK, particularly among the older population. According to a recent report, an estimated 8.75 million people in the country have sought medical attention for osteoarthritis, the most common form of the condition.
Chartered physiotherapist Justine Musiime explains that osteoarthritis is primarily caused by the degeneration or "wear and tear" of the joints, often affecting the knees, hips, hands, and spine. Symptoms can include severe morning pain, swelling, and a crunching sound when moving the affected area. While the severity varies, osteoarthritis is more prevalent in women than men.
Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own joints, is another prevalent issue. This can lead to inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and general feelings of unwellness. Gout, caused by a buildup of uric acid, is known to primarily affect the big toe, causing it to become swollen, painful, and sometimes discolored.
Musiime emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help as soon as symptoms appear, as early intervention can help manage the condition and potentially slow its progression. Medication, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can provide relief, while staying active through low-impact exercises like swimming and walking can also be beneficial.
While arthritis may not be curable, Musiime assures that with the right treatment and lifestyle adjustments, those affected can maintain their quality of life and continue to perform everyday tasks with greater ease.
