Urgent Recall: Antiseptic Wipes May Cause Deadly Infections
23 Mar
Summary
- Nearly 400 lots of Webcol alcohol prep pads recalled due to bacterial contamination.
- Contaminated wipes may harbor Paenibacillus phoenicis, risking deadly blood infections.
- Affected products were distributed across the US, Puerto Rico, and Japan.

Cardinal Health has initiated a recall for nearly 400 lots of its Webcol Large Alcohol Prep Pads, a common antiseptic wipe containing 70 percent isopropyl alcohol. This action was prompted by the discovery that the wipes may be contaminated with Paenibacillus phoenicis, a resilient bacteria known to resist cleaning agents.
Health officials have flagged a significant risk that these contaminated wipes could lead to severe infections, including those that spread through the nervous system. Individuals with compromised immune systems, such as chemotherapy patients or those with uncontrolled diabetes, are particularly vulnerable to developing life-threatening conditions like bacteremia or central nervous system infections.
The recalled antiseptic wipes were distributed within the United States, Puerto Rico, and Japan, with sales occurring between September 2025 and February 2026. Consumers are strongly advised to check their first aid supplies and immediately dispose of any affected products. It remains unclear if any infections, hospitalizations, or fatalities have occurred as a result of the contamination.
