The findings, published in JAMA Pediatrics, indicate a steady rise in resistance over the past two decades, with the most pronounced increases seen in infants, children in intensive care, and those residing in resource-limited areas.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria evolve to become less susceptible to drugs. This trend complicates treatment, heightening the risk of severe illness and death. By 2021, approximately 840,000 deaths among children under five were linked to AMR. Researchers observed alarming resistance patterns, particularly with commonly used "Access" antibiotics, and noted concerning increases in "Watch" and "Reserve" drugs, which are critical for difficult-to-treat infections.
Future projections suggest continued resistance growth through 2035, especially for carbapenem-class antibiotics. This trend, driven largely by Gram-negative bacteria, could significantly limit treatment options for severe childhood infections. Experts emphasize that preventing further increases requires collaborative efforts in antibiotic stewardship from both healthcare providers and families, including judicious prescription and adherence to treatment guidelines.
The study also launched a new platform for monitoring resistance patterns globally and forecasting trends, underscoring the urgent need for improved surveillance, responsible antibiotic use, and enhanced access to effective treatments for children worldwide.
