AP Collector Urges Organ Donation Amidst Critical Shortage
13 Aug
Summary
- Thousands in Andhra Pradesh await life-saving kidney transplants.
- Annual organ transplants fall far short of the critical demand.
- Awareness campaigns are vital to overcome misconceptions and boost donations.

District Collector Sumit Kumar has urged the public to increase awareness about organ and body donation. He highlighted a critical shortfall in organ availability compared to the urgent demand. In Andhra Pradesh alone, nearly 4,800 people are currently on the waiting list for kidney transplants.
However, the state is only able to perform about 350 kidney transplants each year. This significant disparity underscores the need for greater public participation. The Collector encouraged a spirit of volunteerism, viewing organ donation as a valuable contribution to society.
To address the growing demand, Mr. Kumar stressed the importance of streamlining clinical procedures and establishing additional transplant centers. He also emphasized the necessity of sustained awareness campaigns to dispel common myths and encourage more individuals to voluntarily pledge their organs and bodies for donation. An awareness rally was also flagged off to traverse key intersections within the Chittoor Municipal Corporation.
