Hospitals Face Calls for Itemized Medicine Bills
18 Oct
Summary
- Hospitals urged to provide itemized bills for medicines and devices.
- Soaring healthcare costs place a severe financial burden on families.
- Other states like Maharashtra and Karnataka mandated billing transparency.

The Praja Arogya Vedika (PAV) has called upon the Andhra Pradesh government to implement immediate orders requiring transparent, itemized billing for medicines, medical devices, surgical items, and consumables. This initiative is intended for all government and private hospitals within the state.
The PAV highlighted that escalating healthcare costs significantly burden families, especially those undergoing extensive treatments like surgeries or cancer care. Currently, patients often lack clarity regarding the actual costs of procured items, their maximum retail prices (MRPs), and the final amounts billed through hospital pharmacies.
Citing examples from other states, the PAV pointed to Maharashtra's recent mandate for displaying medical service rates and Karnataka's directive for hospital pharmacies to show landing prices and MRPs on bills. PAV has proposed a 10-point charter, demanding bills that separately list product names, quantities, unit prices, procurement costs, MRPs, and patient charges.
Furthermore, the organization seeks to extend transparency to essential consumables and implants. They also advocate for robust monitoring, inspection, and grievance redressal mechanisms to address complaints about excessive markups and encourage collaboration with the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to investigate price disparities.
