Andhra Pradesh Surpasses 300 Organ Transplants in a Historic Year
1 Jan
Summary
- Andhra Pradesh's AP Jeevandan achieved over 300 organ transplants in 2025.
- The state saw a significant increase in deceased donors, reaching 93 in 2025.
- VIMS is the sole government hospital in AP performing liver transplant surgeries.

Andhra Pradesh has achieved a landmark in public healthcare, with AP Jeevandan recording over 300 organ transplantations in the 2025 calendar year. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav hailed this as a historic milestone, underscoring the impact of organ donation and robust medical systems. This achievement reflects a steady rise in deceased donors, totaling 93 in 2025 alone.
Between 2020 and 2025, Andhra Pradesh facilitated 1,740 live organ transplants, predominantly kidney and liver procedures within families. Despite increased public awareness, the response for organ donation remains insufficient. A significant number of potential donors, particularly from road accident victims, are missed due to societal and religious hesitations.
The Visakha Institute of Medical Science (VIMS) stands out as the first and only government hospital in Andhra Pradesh to successfully perform a liver transplant. Efforts continue to overcome societal barriers and increase organ donation rates to meet the persistent demand.
