441 Children Gain New Life Via Free Surgeries

In Andhra Pradesh, the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) has provided free surgeries to 441 children under 18 between April and August 19 this year. The state government allocated ₹2.42 crore for these procedures, focusing on early detection and treatment of various congenital and childhood health conditions.

Data from health screenings at Anganwadi centers and schools identified these children. Key procedures included 132 surgeries for retinopathy of prematurity, 72 for cleft lip and palate, 30 for congenital heart disease, and 35 for clubfoot. Many other surgeries addressed conditions like deafness, cataracts, and appendicitis.

To ensure access to specialized care, children needing procedures unavailable in government facilities were referred to 15 empanelled private hospitals. This program, integrated with Dr NTR Vaidya Seva and PM-JAY, aims to alleviate financial stress on families. The health minister noted ongoing efforts to counsel parents and highlighted specialized service centers for specific conditions.
