Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam is investigating the suicides of two female postgraduate students that occurred within a five-day period. The first incident on September 24 involved Dr P Sailaja, a final-year MD General Medicine student, who was found deceased at her residence. Her family indicated that stress from ongoing examinations was a significant factor in her distress.
Tragically, a second postgraduate student, Y Sravani, a first-year ENT student from Hyderabad, was found dead in her rented accommodation on September 28. Police reported that Sravani left behind a suicide note stating no one should be held responsible for her death. The college administration has acknowledged the incidents, emphasizing their ongoing counselling services and encouraging students to communicate any difficulties.
In response to the dual tragedies, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has directed the Medical Education Director to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding both student deaths.
