A new portable mini lab, developed by French startup Allergen Alert, is set to transform dining out for individuals with food sensitivities. This compact device, comparable in size to a paperback book, will allow users to quickly test meals for allergens and gluten directly at their table.
The mini lab automates the steps of professional analytical tests, using a small food sample in a single-use pouch. Its creator, Bénédicte Astier, was motivated by her daughter's experience with anaphylaxis, aiming to provide a reliable safety net for allergy sufferers. The device is expected to significantly reduce the risk of accidental exposure to triggering ingredients.
Allergen Alert secured €3.6 million ($4.23 million) in funding and plans to launch the mini lab in the latter half of 2026, with the device priced at approximately $200. Testing pouches will be available via a monthly subscription. While a prototype was shown at CES 2026 Unveiled, the final exterior design is still being refined.
