Pain With Drinks Led to Cancer Diagnosis

A young medical assistant, Claire Dougherty, from Philadelphia, experienced a severe and puzzling pain whenever she drank alcohol. This pain, which began in her neck and radiated to her ear, led her to suspect various causes, including an intolerance to vodka. Despite the discomfort, she continued to socialize, though the pain caused her increasing anxiety. In September 2025, Dougherty felt a lump in her throat, prompting her to seek medical attention. Immediate tests, including a CT scan and biopsy, identified a tumor on her trachea. In November 2025, she received a diagnosis of stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Following this, she began chemotherapy, completing six rounds by early February 2026. This treatment successfully reduced the tumor, easing pressure on her airway. Dougherty is now preparing for 20 rounds of radiation therapy and encourages others to prioritize their health and seek medical advice for any concerning symptoms.
