Alberta Triples Funding to Support Mental Health of Continuing Care Workers
9 Aug
Summary
- $7.5 million investment to support mental health of continuing care workers
- Aims to address mental toll of caring for Alberta's elderly and vulnerable
- Supports include counseling sessions and workload management training
On August 9, 2025, the Alberta government announced a significant investment to support the mental well-being of continuing care workers in the province. The $7.5 million funding triples the current provincial support for these frontline staff, who play a crucial role in caring for Alberta's elderly and vulnerable populations.
According to Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services Jason Nixon, continuing care workers "show up day after day to support Albertans in some of their most vulnerable moments." The government recognizes the mental toll this work can take and is committed to ensuring these workers receive the support they need.
The funding will go towards the Care for Staff program, an initiative that aims to address the wellness needs of frontline workers based on their feedback. Over the past two years, the program has provided counseling sessions and workload management training to more than 12,000 workers, helping to create a more mental health-conscious work environment.
The province believes this investment will lead to better workplace conditions and higher-quality care for clients, as operators see increased employee retention and lower absenteeism rates. By prioritizing the well-being of those who care for others, Alberta is taking an important step in supporting its most vulnerable citizens.
