Alberta Pediatricians Urge Free RSV Shot for All Newborns
16 Apr
Summary
- Pediatricians advocate for free RSV preventative shots for all newborns.
- Alberta currently offers shots only to high-risk infants.
- Over 500 infants hospitalized with RSV in Alberta this season.
Pediatricians in Alberta are calling on the provincial government to make the preventative RSV shot, nirsevimab, available for free to all newborns. They argue this would significantly reduce infant hospitalizations and alleviate pressure on hospitals during the peak respiratory virus season. Alberta has already reported 516 infant hospitalizations and 59 ICU admissions due to RSV this current season.
While other provinces like Ontario and Quebec offer universal coverage, Alberta currently limits the shot to specific high-risk infants. The Alberta Medical Association's pediatric section has formally requested expanded access for all babies under six months old and those born during the upcoming season. Experts emphasize the shot's proven effectiveness, citing an 83% reduction in RSV-related hospitalizations in other jurisdictions.
