Alberta Measles Cases Surge: Outbreak Concerns Rise
16 Jan
Summary
- Alberta sees 27 new measles cases this week, highest since August.
- Active cases span south, north, and central health zones.
- Experts fear a new surge due to low vaccination rates.
Alberta's measles case numbers have significantly increased, with 27 new cases confirmed this week, marking the highest weekly total since August. These active cases are now distributed across the south, north, and central health zones, sparking concern among public health officials and medical experts about the potential for a resurgence of the outbreak.
Infectious diseases physician Dr. Karina Top described the rise as "alarming," warning that it suggests the virus may have entered communities with lower vaccination rates. She fears this could lead to a substantial increase in cases, estimating that many undiagnosed individuals may be unknowingly spreading the highly contagious illness. This situation is considered a setback in the province's efforts to control and end the measles outbreak.
The Alberta government acknowledged the increase but stated that most new cases reflect transmission within a few families rather than widespread community spread. Public health officials are continuing targeted vaccination campaigns and outreach efforts to boost immunization uptake. Despite a nearly 39 percent increase in vaccine administration provincewide compared to the previous year, herd immunity has not yet been achieved.
