Alberta Boosts Hospital Capacity for Virus Season
25 Oct
Summary
- Alberta has a record 9,003 acute care spaces available.
- 194 temporary spaces can be activated if demand rises.
- New provincial center aims to streamline patient assessment and treatment.

Alberta's government has announced significant preparations for the upcoming respiratory virus season, bolstering hospital capacity to a record 9,003 acute care spaces. This expansion includes the permanent addition of over 221 spaces, with more than 194 temporary spaces on standby for activation if patient demand escalates. A new provincial operations center, spearheaded by Acute Care Alberta, is set to streamline administrative processes and patient flow within emergency departments. This center will feature experienced clinicians to assess patients earlier, order tests, and initiate treatment sooner, aiming to identify worsening conditions proactively.
These measures are designed to alleviate pressure on healthcare teams by allowing them to focus more on direct patient care, reducing administrative burdens. An automated data center will monitor bed capacity and staffing levels daily. While these steps aim to enhance efficiency and patient outcomes, some experts advocate for increased emphasis on preventative strategies. Concerns have been raised regarding the need for improved ventilation systems in public spaces and the mandatory use of N95 masks within all healthcare facilities to curb the spread of respiratory illnesses.
The province is also pushing a vaccine campaign following a historically severe flu season last year. Albertans could book appointments starting October 5, with vaccines rolling out October 19. The government has acknowledged potential vaccine mismatches from the previous year and hopes for a better match this season to combat prevalent influenza strains more effectively. Hospital-level decision-making regarding enhanced protection measures, such as masking, will continue to be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
