5 Sep
Summary
- Over 12% of college students in Chennai found to be diabetic or pre-diabetic
- 30% had high waist circumference, putting them at risk of metabolic syndrome
- 40% of students reported mental stress due to various factors

According to a health screening conducted among college students in Chennai last month, over 12% were found to be either diabetic or at risk of developing the condition. The screening, undertaken by the Apollo SHINE Foundation, also revealed that 30% of the 10,000 students had a high waist circumference, putting them at risk of metabolic syndrome.
The screening also uncovered other concerning health issues among the students. Over 2% were found to have hypertension, and at least 15% had high triglyceride levels. Worryingly, 40% of the students screened complained of mental stress due to various factors, and 21% admitted to consuming junk food regularly. Only 16% said they exercised daily.
The findings of this health assessment have prompted calls for greater awareness and preventive measures to address the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases among the youth in the state. Local authorities have emphasized the need to extend such screening programs to all districts to better understand and address these critical health concerns.
