Dehydration Epidemic Looms: Experts Warn of Alarming Trends in 2025
14 Nov
Summary
- 16-21% of people worldwide exhibit dehydration symptoms in 2025
- Chronic low water intake can lead to kidney stones, kidney disease, and cognitive impairment
- Practical tips to stay hydrated include setting reminders, infusing water, and eating hydrating foods

As of November 14th, 2025, a growing dehydration crisis has emerged worldwide, with experts sounding the alarm. According to the 2025 Dehydration Statistics report, approximately 16-21% of people globally now exhibit symptoms of dehydration, including thirst, dry mouth, and decreased urination.
The issue is far from trivial. Chronic low water intake, as little as 500 ml per day, can have severe consequences for the body. Senior Nutritionist Ipsita Chakraborty explains that this can lead to mild to moderate dehydration, reducing urine output and drawing water from cells, resulting in fatigue, dizziness, and constipation. Over time, it can also impair kidney function, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and even chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Nishchay Bhanuprakash, a Nephrologist, further warns that consistently low water intake can promote the formation of uric acid and calcium oxalate crystals, raising the likelihood of kidney stones. It may also contribute to a faster decline in kidney function, potentially leading to chronic kidney disease, especially in those with other risk factors like hypertension or diabetes.
The impact of dehydration extends beyond physical health. Even mild dehydration can affect mood, alertness, memory, and concentration, leading to increased fatigue, confusion, and headaches. Experts emphasize the importance of developing sustainable hydration habits, such as drinking water regularly, infusing it with flavors, and incorporating hydrating foods into one's diet.
