- Population growth and health inequalities drive increased demand.

Magpas Air Ambulance has reported its busiest May on record, responding to almost 200 incidents across the East of England. The charity's operations spanned nine counties, with the first May bank holiday weekend being particularly demanding, seeing 11 callouts in a single 24-hour period.
Cambridgeshire represented 53% of all incidents, with crews attending 56 callouts. The charity's chief executive, Daryl Brown, stated that Cambridgeshire's status as a rapidly growing area necessitates increased emergency medical services. He further noted that ongoing housing developments in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire will likely lead to sustained demand.
Magpas operates from Alconbury Weald, near Huntingdon, utilizing one helicopter and four rapid response vehicles. Its teams are equipped to perform advanced procedures usually reserved for hospitals, such as general anaesthesia and emergency surgery.
Brown also highlighted significant health and wealth disparities within Cambridgeshire, explaining that individuals in more deprived communities face a higher risk of serious illness and trauma, which the charity frequently attends. The charity, reliant on public donations, is also navigating challenging financial conditions, exacerbated by a substantial increase in aviation fuel costs.
