Loud Music Risks: AIIMS Warns of Permanent Hearing Loss
3 Mar
Summary
- Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can cause irreversible hearing loss.
- Hearing loss from noise develops gradually, making early detection difficult.
- Limit audio device use to 60% volume and 60 minutes for prevention.

Experts at AIIMS, Delhi, have issued a warning regarding the dangers of prolonged exposure to loud music and sounds from personal audio devices, stating it can result in irreversible hearing loss. Professor Dr. Kapil Sikka explained that this hearing decline often progresses slowly, making early detection challenging, but emphasized that such damage, while irreparable, is preventable.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar advised limiting personal audio device usage to below 60% volume and taking breaks after approximately 60 minutes. He stressed that shorter exposure durations are necessary with higher noise levels to prevent cumulative hearing loss. Dr. Poonam Sagar highlighted the importance of raising awareness about preventable causes like noise-induced hearing loss and overuse of personal listening devices, particularly among youth.
AIIMS also advocates for early hearing screening and intervention for children. Dr. Kumar underscored that early detection leads to better treatment outcomes, including universal neonatal hearing screening. For babies diagnosed with profound hearing loss, cochlear implants offer significant rehabilitation possibilities. The theme for World Hearing Day, 'From Communities to Classrooms - Hearing Care for All Children,' underscores the need for timely support to ensure children develop speech, language, and learning abilities to their full potential.
