28 Jul
Summary
- Nearly a third of faculty posts are vacant across 20 AIIMS.
- Non-faculty posts also show over 25% vacancies nationwide.
- Recruitment is a continuous process, facing eligibility challenges.

As of 2026-27, a significant portion of sanctioned faculty positions, nearly one-third, remain vacant across 20 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) nationwide. Specifically, 2,181 out of 6,304 faculty posts are unoccupied.
Non-faculty positions also face considerable shortages, with 15,159 out of 59,225 sanctioned posts lying vacant, exceeding 25%. AIIMS New Delhi alone has 436 vacant faculty positions and 2,461 vacant non-faculty roles.
Despite these numbers, vacancy rates have shown improvement, declining from 39.22% for faculty and 39.19% for non-faculty in 2023-24 to 34.6% and 25.6% respectively in 2026-27.
The government emphasizes that recruitment is an ongoing, dynamic process affected by candidate availability and other factors. Efforts to fill these positions include appointing retired faculty on contract and establishing a Visiting Faculty Scheme for new AIIMS.
