AIIMS Pioneers Ethical AI for India's Health
26 Mar
Summary
- AIIMS is developing AI tools for Indian health priorities.
- Indigenous AI models address data bias for Indian populations.
- Portable and affordable AI innovations reach remote healthcare.

Last month, AIIMS Delhi doctors and researchers engaged in discussions about artificial intelligence at a Delhi summit, acknowledging a period of significant digital transformation in healthcare. As the designated Centre of Excellence for AI in Health, AIIMS is tasked with establishing standards for safe, ethical, and scalable AI adoption.
The institution is actively developing AI solutions for India's specific health priorities, including cancer screening and chronic disease management. A key challenge addressed is 'data bias' in AI tools; therefore, AIIMS focuses on creating frugal technologies. This includes the MadhuNetrAI, which uses low-cost cameras for diabetic retinopathy detection, and building indigenous datasets for dermatology and breast cancer screening tailored to Indian populations.
Innovations are being prioritized for portability and affordability to reach underserved areas. The Arogya Aarohan app allows healthcare workers to assess oral cancer risks using smartphone photos. AI-powered cough analysis aids in tuberculosis diagnosis in rural clinics. Furthermore, an AI system acts as a 'digital co-pilot' in radiology, flagging abnormalities in chest x-rays to help specialists prioritize critical cases and reduce diagnostic delays.
AIIMS is integrating AI literacy into its medical curriculum and supports the national ecosystem by releasing anonymized datasets. These efforts are part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India@2047, aiming for self-reliance and indigenous innovation in health-tech. Partnerships, such as the Indo-French Centre for AI in Health, further foster global interdisciplinary research and trusted AI development.
